Yes, you can make lime from snail shells by heating them in a kiln to produce calcium oxide, also known as quicklime. The process of turning seashells or limestone into lime is called calcination.
Here are the steps for making lime from snail shells:
- Wash the shells and crush them into uniform pieces.
- Place the shells in a kiln with wood and fire at a high temperature, around 1650°F (900°C). The carbon is driven off the shells, leaving behind calcium oxide.
- Add water to the calcium oxide to create calcium hydroxide, also known as lime putty.
- Shape the lime putty and let it set. As the lime putty dries, carbon dioxide enters it and turns it back into calcium carbonate, which is solid and water resistant.
